Would you rather...? 🤔

Would you rather…

  • have a one-on-one hang out with a close friend, or attend a big party next Friday night?
  • spend 1 hour watching entertaining TikTok videos, or diving into a book from your favorite genre?
  • jam out to your favorite same song on repeat, or set your playlist on shuffle and go with the flow?

There’s no right or wrong answer.

Rather, your answers might reveal whether you prefer horizontal or vertical experiences.

Let me explain.

Vertical experiences are like digging a hole in the ground – there’s a singular focus and direction to the activity. The more time you spend in a vertical experience, the deeper you go. It feels like having tunnel vision: the rest of the world becomes blurry, out of focus.

Horizontal experiences are like scanning your eyes across the horizon, and noticing all there is to see — buildings, houses, people walking around, birds flying overhead, the sun setting, the sky changing colors, and everything in between.

Put simply, vertical experiences are about depth.

Horizontal experiences are about breadth, variety, and range.

Most of us enjoy a balance of both types of experiences, though it’s common to have a preference.

Which one sounds more like for you?

  • You prefer vertical experiences – the uninterrupted deep dives, the space to hyper-focus on 1 thing at a time (a riveting book, a song on repeat, a conversation that requires your full attention & presence).
  • You love the variety & breadth of horizontal experiences – chatting with 10 different people at a party, going off on a “tangent” or “side quest” out of sheer curiosity, and shifting attention from one interesting stimulus to another.

“Vertical” folks might find horizontal experiences to be overwhelming — too much stimuli to process. Meanwhile, “horizontal” folks might find vertical experiences to be boring — too much of the same thing.

Remember: there’s no right or wrong way to experience the world. Your way is valid, important, and beautiful.

I hope you find good ways to take care of yourself this week. Horizontally, vertically, or anywhere in between.

P.S. If you're feeling overwhelmed & burnt out, and need help taking care of your nervous system, I'd love to support you. I offer Nervous System Healing Intensives — three 90-minute sessions, using brain-body modalities (Brainspotting, IFS, EMDR) that go deeper than talk therapy & help you feel better, sooner.

Intensives are a type of short-term, accelerated therapy — for folks who are looking for something different than weekly therapy; who need longer than 50-min sessions to go deep & get to the root of the issue.

👉🏽 If you want to get an Intensive on the books, click here to book an intro call. I have a couple spots available for November 2025.

This time of year feels like the turning of a page. Things seem to slow down (as people take time off to be with loved ones) and simultaneously speed up (the mad dash to get everything done before the holidays, the high-pressure “new year, new me” energy). Like many, I grew up setting New Year’s resolutions — like eat healthier, exercise more, improve my sleep. While there’s nothing wrong with setting these goals, this year I want to try something different (& I welcome you to join me)....

While pondering a big decision recently, this question floated through my mind. What would my ancestors do? This question added a totally new dimension & depth to my pondering. I began to see the situation differently, in a bigger context. So I want to share this question with you, too, and let you curiously notice whatever comes up. Pick 1 decision that you’re mulling over. It can be big or small — whether to stay where you are or go somewhere else; whether to commit to project A or B;...

What was the last thing you saw on social media (Instagram, Facebook, TikTok)? An ad, a funny post, a talking head, someone’s dreamy beach vacation? How did it make you feel? And just as curious – did you choose to see this content (because you opted to follow a specific page or account), or was it randomly put in front of you, via the algorithm? (Ah, the almighty and mysterious algorithm…) This year, I’ve been noticing how being on social media makes my head spin & my attention scatter. On...
